I Know That Councils Are Having A Tough Time,

cutting rubbish collections to households to once every 3 or even 4 weeks, and closing libraries, why some councils are so short of cash it is alleged that only half of council chiefs earn more than the prime minister, where does this money come from for these salaries? well here is one answer, back in between 1999 and 2,000 over a period of 365 days Durham County Council, which faces axing 1,600 jobs due to funding cuts, overpaid council tax benefit to great grandmother Elsie Gallagher, 82, by wait for it, 0.07p, the debt mounted up at a whopping rate of £0.00018 a day which was due to a change in circumstances,

she commented ‘It appears they made a mistake, but I can’t believe it’s still legal to claim back something from so long ago, and I didn’t like the wording on the back about criminal procedures,’ not content with wasting .32p on the stamp to send her the bill plus the cost of the highly printed envelope, forget about the administration charges, the council announced in the letter she would receive another one! the letter stated 7p would be added to Mrs Gallagher’s council tax bill and she would receive another letter telling her how much was now owing in total, well what to do? send her down for a couple of years or let her off? the good news is that the council rather than blaming an over zealous official decided to blame their computer for their mistake in over paying, the one owned and programed by? you guessed it the council!
