When I Think Of Scientists Discovering New Unknown Species,

I always seem to conjure up,

images of a tropical rainforest with specimen hunters going through all sorts of horrors and privations in uninhibited, untamed areas, but it appears that you may find a new species in your own backyard, the authors were not surprised when they found 12 totally new species of flies in private Los Angeles, U.S.A. backyards, in a paper published in Biodiversity Data Journal, a team of three entomologists describe 12 species that are so rare that some only appeared once out of the pool of more than 43,000 specimens, and none of them showed up more than 10 times, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has set up an Urban Nature Research Center, where local citizen scientists can join in on the important work of exploring the biodiversity of the city, so as you have a barby in your backyard look out for new bugs, you never know, if you find a new one it could be named after you!
